Cardiology and Internal Medicine

Cardiology in Vienna – heart screening and clarity when symptoms appear

Two specialists in Internal Medicine and Cardiology · ECG, ultrasound and laboratory in-house

The heart often speaks up late. A heart check shows where you stand before anything happens – and puts things in context when symptoms are already there: palpitations, pressure in the chest, breathlessness on the stairs or blood pressure that no longer fits.

Prevention

Knowing the risk before anything happens

Heart attack and stroke develop over years. Cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, smoking and family history together form a picture from which it can be derived what makes sense now – and what does not.

The risk is neither played down nor dramatised. You receive the figures and an assessment of what they mean for you.

In preparation:prevention packages in cooperation with supplementary insurers. The details will appear here as soon as they are available.

Rhythm

When the heart skips a beat

Extra beats are common and usually harmless – atrial fibrillation is not. The difference can be measured, and that is exactly what comes first.

In case of acute chest pain, breathlessness or loss of consciousness, please call 144. MEDINO is a practice, not an emergency department.

ECG and long-term ECGAlso over 24 hours or longer.
Atrial fibrillationAssessment, treatment and stroke prevention.
Exercise ECGWhen symptoms only occur on exertion.

High blood pressure

Adjusting blood pressure means staying with it

A single high reading says little. What is meaningful are measurements across the day. Contributing factors are checked alongside and the treatment adjusted until it fits.

24-hour measurementBlood pressure across a whole day, at night as well.
Looking for causesKidneys, thyroid, sleep apnoea, medication.
Monitoring planFixed appointments instead of flying blind between prescriptions.

Cardio-oncology

Looking after the heart during cancer treatment

Some chemotherapies and targeted treatments put strain on the heart. Knowing this in advance and monitoring it allows countermeasures to be taken in good time.

The baseline is established before treatment starts, monitored during treatment and followed up afterwards – in coordination with the treating oncology team.

Neighbouring specialties in the same building

Not every question about the heart ends in cardiology. These three specialties adjoin it professionally and hold consultations at the same address – a second journey is not needed.

How it works

Frequently asked questions

Good to know

I get palpitations, but only in the evening. Is an ECG of any use then?
A resting ECG only shows the moment. That is precisely why there is the long-term ECG over 24 hours or longer – it also captures what occurs only occasionally.
How long does a heart check take?
Allow around an hour for the doctor's appointment. If current blood values are available, consultation, ECG, cardiac ultrasound and the discussion of findings all take place in this one appointment. If they are missing, a short appointment for the blood sample comes first – the values are available the next working day, and the doctor's appointment follows.
Do I need to fast for the cardiac ultrasound?
No. For the blood sample it makes sense depending on the question – you will be told when the appointment is arranged.
Do you also treat heart failure?
Yes, in medication adjustment and ongoing monitoring. Where a hospital is needed – for a cardiac catheterisation laboratory, for instance – a targeted referral is made, and the follow-up care stays at the practice.
What is cardio-oncology?
Looking after the heart during and after cancer treatment. Some medicines put strain on the heart muscle; with a baseline before treatment starts and checks along the way, countermeasures can be taken in good time.
Can I get a second opinion on an existing set of findings?
Yes. Bring along all the documents you have – findings, ECGs, medication list. The findings are put in context – openly, even when they confirm the previous result.
How quickly can I get an appointment?
Usually within a few days. For acute symptoms, please call:+43 1 226 5567.
When are you open?
Monday from 9 am to 6 pm, Tuesday to Friday from 9 am to 8 pm, Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm. Closed on Sunday.

On public holidays, doctors and therapists at the MEDINO Medical Centre often offer on-call services. Whether and for how long depends on which doctors are available – we usually announce it here, on Google and by phone a week in advance.
Do I receive my findings digitally?
Yes. You receive the findings digitally; on request additionally printed out. If something stands out, you will be actively informed.
I take several medicines. Should I bring anything?
Please bring a current list of your medicines, along with previous findings and – if available – your blood pressure records from recent weeks.
Do I need a referral to see a cardiologist?
No. MEDINO is a Wahlarzt practice, you book directly. For further examinations outside the building – a cardiac MRI, for instance – your doctor issues the referral.
What does the heart check cost, and what does the health insurance fund pay back?
After the appointment you receive an invoice and submit it to your insurance fund. What is reimbursed is decided by the fund. We are happy to tell you the current fees in advance atservus@medino.at.
